As a subconsultant to Jacobs, ARS Engineers provided engineering and surveying services to the NTTA. ARS was responsible for all Traffic Control Plans (TCP) for the project. The TCP maintained the current number of existing lanes along SH 121 and US 75 during construction activities. It had to accommodate not only the complex design to a four-level stack interchange but was completed within a condensed 26 month schedule.
ARS also provided survey control by establishing/verifying tie-in connections with existing geometrics, including the four terminus points of the main lanes, service roads, drives, and cross streets. Field survey work included performing all field ties for level B SUE, locating above ground utilities, verifying benchmark coordinates, establishing additional horizontal and vertical control, performing datum ties, and establishing elevations on an as needed basis. By using advanced robotic technology, topographic survey work was expedited and resulted in nearly 20% reduction in cost.
The project was divided into two contracts. During the first contract, ARS Surveyors recommended including several tasks expected to be performed in the second. There would be more “at risk” work but the team would be ahead of schedule upon commencement of the project. After discussion with the client, ARS agreed to an accelerated design effort for our allowed assignments and made a commitment to provide an 80-90% design effort for our formal 65% submittal. This enabled the project to bid ahead of schedule.
